Toyota Prius vs. Hyundai IONIQ
Hybrid cars are all the rage - and it all started with the Toyota Prius. It was the first-ever mass-marketed hybrid vehicle when it hit the streets of Japan in 1997 and later came to the U.S. in 2000. As newcomers, like the Hyundai IONIQ, hit the market, you’ll probably be wondering how they match up to the original.
If you’re ready to go hybrid around Durham, Raleigh, Chapel Hill, Cary, and Apex, the 2022 Toyota Prius and the 2022 Hyundai IONIQ are probably on your short list. Our team at Mark Jacobson Toyota is here to see which one is better suited to you!

Both the Prius and the IONIQ offer compact bodies to maximize efficiency. You’ll still find plenty of wiggle room in both models, with over 42 inches of front legroom. Sink into the Sof-Tex® upholstery available in the Prius. This synthetic leather is easier to maintain and more resistant to UV rays than the natural leather available in the IONIQ.
When it comes to interior technology, you may find the available 11.6-inch touchscreen in the 2022 Toyota Prius more user-friendly than the available 10.25-inch touchscreen in the IONIQ.
Both give you control of connective features, like:
- Android Auto™
- Apple CarPlay®
- SiriusXM® Radio
- Premium Audio system
If you’re planning your next road trip, you’ll need a hybrid with lots of cargo room. The Prius delivers 27.4 cubic feet behind the rear seats. The Hyundai IONIQ falls just short, with only 26.5 cubic feet behind the rear seats. Both models offer 60/40 split fold-down rear seats, so you can expand your storage space further.
Doing a good turn for the environment in a hybrid vehicle is sure to give you more peace of mind. The wide array of safety features available in both models will amplify that feeling.
The 2022 Prius comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.0. It includes:
- Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
- Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
- Lane Tracing Assist
- Automatic High Beams
- Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
- Road Sign Assist
The Hyundai IONIQ can be outfitted with several similar features thanks to Hyundai SmartSense. One feature you’ll only get with the Prius, however, is the Rear-Seat Reminder. If you open a rear door before departure, the system will remind you to check back there once you reach your destination. That will help ensure all your valuables and most precious cargo are accounted for.
Both models are also available with a Blind Spot Monitor. It will alert you to vehicles riding alongside you, so you can change lanes with ease. It works with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, which helps ensure the coast is clear before you back out of a tight spot.
The 2022 Toyota Prius and the Hyundai IONIQ both offer a similar hybrid powertrain. It consists of a 4-cylinder engine coupled with a permanent magnet AC synchronous electric motor.
Both models generate about 120 lb-ft of torque, so you’ll have plenty of oomph when you put the pedal to the metal.
Regenerative braking harnesses the kinetic energy produced when applying the brakes and uses it to recharge the hybrid battery. This system is standard on the Toyota Prius and only available on the higher trim levels of the IONIQ.
Front-wheel drive is standard on both models. However, if you need more capability on slick streets and all-terrain paths, only the Prius is available with Electronic On-Demand Compact All-Wheel Drive (AWD-e).
