If you want a tough crossover SUV that will provide you with a smooth on-road ride but can still handle tough terrain, the Toyota 4Runner is an excellent choice. For 2019, Toyota made some changes to the TRD Pro trim. There are new Fox shock absorbers, a sunroof now comes standard, and there is now a new skid plate and roof rack. Toyota also introduces a new Limited Nightshade Edition to the 2019 lineup.
Trim Levels (Exterior)
The seven 4Runner trim levels start with the SR5. This base model has 17-inch wheels, skid plates, roof rails, heated side mirrors, and fog lights. The TRD Off-Road adds wider 17-inch wheels, and comes with a locking rear differential, while the Premium adds interior upgrades to either of these models. The TRD Pro adds more off-road features including upgraded front springs, Fox dampers, black 17-inch wheels, a different front skid plate, all-terrain tires, and a roof rack.
The Limited is the trim for luxury seekers with 20-inch wheels and several interior upgrades. Take a look at the new Limited Nightshade Edition for black exterior trim elements in place of the chrome and silver accents from the Limited.
Engine (Power)
All of the 4Runner models get the same 4.0-liter V-6 engine with 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. This powertrain works with a five-speed automatic transmission. The SR5 and Limited come standard with rear-wheel drive and offer four-wheel drive as an option, with the rest of the trims coming only with four-wheel drive.
Performance
The 4Runner is one of the only SUVs that still uses body-on-frame construction, and because of this, it handles more like a truck. The V-6 has more than enough muscle for passing and merging, and it can tow up to 5,000 pounds. When you take the 4Runner off the beaten path, it performs like a champ, taking on almost any type of terrain.
Interior
There is room for up to five or seven passengers in the 4Runner, depending on the trim and configuration. The base models come with cloth upholstery with leatherette and leather available as you move up through the trims. The cabin has a simple design without a lot of frills, and there is a huge cargo area with over 74 cubic feet of storage space behind the second row. Folding the seats down opens this up to 89.7 cubic feet.
A 6.1-inch touch screen comes standard, along with satellite radio and a 120-volt power outlet and Toyota's Entune infotainment system. An integrated navigation system is an available option, and you can also upgrade to a 15-speaker JBL stereo system if you choose the Limited trim.
Safety Features
All of the 4Runners get a standard integrated backup camera. This not only helps when you need to back up into a tight spot, but it also gives you the perfect view when hitching up a trailer. You'll get eight standard air bags in the 4Runner, side-impact door beams, a tire pressure monitoring system, and ToyotaCare, a no-cost maintenance plan covering factory scheduled maintenance.
