2019 Toyota Highlander
The Toyota Highlander is one of the highest rated family-friendly SUVs. It has three rows of seats, room for up to eight passengers, and a roomy cabin. The 2019 sees just a few minor changes to the exterior design including a black side rocker panel, and updated housings for the headlights, taillights, and fog lights. Trim Levels (Exterior)
The Highlander comes in six different trim levels. The base is the LE which comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, heated side mirrors, and a windshield wiper de-icer. The LE Plus adds a power liftgate, fog lights, and a flip-up rear window. Step up to the XLE for a sunroof and roof rails, and you'll also get interior upgrades.
Choose the SE for a sportier look, 19-inch wheels, LED running lights, and a sport-tuned suspension. The Limited also adds LED running lights, and comes with unique 19-inch wheels, while the Limited Platinum comes with a panoramic sunroof and it adds automatic windshield wipers.
Engine (Power)
The Highlander LE comes with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 185 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. It has a six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. The LE Plus and up get a 3.5-liter V-6 engine that generates 295 horsepower and 263 pound-feet of torque, and this engine is an available option with the LE. An eight-speed automatic comes with the V-6 and Toyota also offers the option for all-wheel drive.
Performance
While the base four-cylinder provides the Highlander with plenty of power, the V-6 gets the SUV up to speed quicker and with more ease, even while carrying a full load of people and cargo. The eight-speed transmission shifts smoothly through the gears, and passengers will appreciate the smooth and comfortable ride.
Interior
With the second-row bench seat there is room for up to eight, or you can opt for the captain's chairs and have room for seven. The cabin features soft-touch materials throughout, and you can upgrade to the Platinum Limited for luxurious perforated leather seats with heat and ventilation for the front seat passengers, and heat for the second row. Stepping up to the Limited or the Limited Platinum will also add creature comforts such as a heated steering wheel.
Technology in the Highlander includes the Driver Speak Easy PA system, five USB ports, a 6.1-inch touch screen in the lower-end trims and an 8-inch touch screen in the higher-end models. All trims get the Entune infotainment system, and the Limited adds a premium JBL stereo system upgrade.
Safety Features
Standard safety equipment in the 2019 Highlander includes a rearview camera and Toyota Safety Sense. This suite of advanced safety systems includes adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, automatic high beams, and a front collision mitigation system with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking. Bump up to the Limited to add blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. Depending on the trim, you can also get a surround view camera system and both front and rear parking sensors.
