Meet Toyota Safety Sense 3.0
Meet Toyota Safety Sense 3.0: A New Standard in Safety
Toyota's safety features are industry-leading, and Toyota Safety Sense is at the forefront of why safe drivers choose Toyota. They're also the reason new Toyota models earn the?Insurance Institute for Highway Safety?(IIHS)?top safety picks every year and have done so for the past 15 years straight.
Safety Sense uses radar technology paired with a forward-facing camera to identify obstacles, lane markings, and even road signs. The high-tech system then uses this information to power a variety of driver assistance systems.
The latest update to Toyota Safety Sense, Safety Sense 3.0 takes driver aids to a new level. Here's how:

New for Toyota Safety Sense 3.0
As well as upgraded radar and camera hardware, Toyota Safety Sense now gets over-the-air updates for continuous improvement. The big-ticket item for SS 3.0 though, is the addition of Proactive Driving Assist which lightly controls steering and braking to help mitigate or even avoid collisions.
- Proactive Driving Assist functions in three key ways:
- Obstacle Anticipation Assist
- Deceleration Assist
- Steering Assist
Steering assist detects lane markings and edge lines to make it easier to stay in your lane. Between 5 mph and 80 mph, the system will vary the electric power steering effort to help you stay in your lane with less effort.
Deceleration assist gently reduces your speed when the system detects oncoming vehicles, motorcycles, or certain upcoming curves in the road, this makes it easier to react to unexpected movements ahead.
Between 20 and 30 mph, Obstacle Anticipation Assist will brake and/or steer gently to help you maintain safe distances to obstacles it detects. This system can detect parked cars, pedestrians, and cyclists that are near or in your path.
These systems are designed to be less intrusive than the active driving aids that are already part of Safety Sense.

Other Toyota Safety Sense Features
Those features get updates in TSS 3.0. The features include:
Pre-Collision System
Which warns drivers of imminent collisions with audio and visual cues and can also help aid in braking.
Lane Departure Alert
Which "reads" lane markings and offers an audio and visual warning when you're straying from your lane. It can also provide gentle corrective steering to maintain your lane.
Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
Maintains speed in traffic at speeds of 20 mph or higher. This adaptive cruise control helps maintain distance to vehicles in front. It is paired with Lane Tracing Assist which uses gentle steering input to keep the vehicle centered in your lane as long as DRCC is active.
Other Features
Other features of TSS include driver monitoring, automatic high beams, and blind-spot detection.
